Space Saving Storage

I could have named this post "Why I Think My Dad is a Genius".  He is a master at coming up with logical, simple solutions to everyday problems.
Dangling storage jars!  These are hung beneath a cabinet in his garage workshop.

He has a long history of putting things "up".  If we ever couldn't find something and we knew dad was the last person to use said thing, we just had to look up and we'd find it.  On the highest shelf.  Or screwed to the bottom of a cabinet.  The man likes his counter space.

He just took 2 screws and anchored the lid of an old jar to the underside of a cabinet.  When you want to get the contents out of your jar, just unscrew it from the lid and get what you want.

Then when you're done, just screw the jar back into the lid.

Pretty smart, right?  And for almost $0.  I would love to do something like this under the cabinets in our laundry room.

Let me know what you think.  Could you use this idea somewhere in your house?
Blessings,
Jamie

  6. My dad did this in his garage. My sister, brother and I would help him sort screws, nails, etc and he would have to put the jars back since we were too little to reach. My dad died almost 3 years ago and I miss him everyday. This brought back so many memories! Thanks for posting.

  16. Haha, even though his youngest "baby" is now 31, my dad still has our old baby food jars screwed in to the cabinets in his garage holding his various "dad stuff".

  20. My Great Grandfather did this with jars in the barn. My Grandfather has done it in his basement. My Dad has them in a cabinet this way. We have a couple jars in the basement. If I could figure out how to make it work in my craft space that would be awesome! Thanks for sharing. Saw you at Chef in Training!

  21. It's a great idea indeed - I've seen it done somewhere before, and it's such a good use of perfectly usable, usually wasted, space! :)

  22. I remember my dad doing something similar! I also remember back in the day when we used to use baby food jars for the smaller bits and pieces to keep them under control for crafting or whatever.

It's good that these 'old' ideas are still around helping people get organized.

  23. Great idea - I've mentioned it in a post on my own blog (I'm in the middle of sorting out my art space and it's a MESS) and am sending everyone over here to see exactly how you did it. Really attractive too - I'm already checking out our kitchen, lol.

  29. My Grandfather always used this screw top trick for everything. He also took a 2X4 board the depth of the cabinet and attached it to a drawer slider so you could pull it out and see all the jars

I'm 79 yrs old & I remember my Grandfather doing this. I did it with baby jars to hold thumb tacks, nails, screws, paper clips etc, . I had them in the garage, under a shelf. We used this for any small things easily misplaced. I remember people saying there is nothing new under the sun. Old things & methods become new again.
