Sew IKEA Runners Into a Rug (for only $35)

I wanted a jute rug for almost two years now.

We really don't have the money for it.  Not even the one from Home Goods.  Also, the more I thought about it, I didn't want something quite so scratchy since the kids spend so much time on the floor.  So I came up with another idea last May (and yes, I'm just getting around to posting about it now).  It involved using table runners from IKEA... here's how it turned out

I usually attack projects... not so much because I'm confident, but more because I have to see if how it turns out.  I'm a little stressed until I get to see the final result; hopefully it isn't a total bomb/waste of money.

This one I really dragged my feet for some reason.

I started sewing the rug last Spring and it was looking pretty jacked up.  I was disappointed in myself so I hid it in the back of the laundry room, never to be seen again.  I considered taking it apart and returning the runners to IKEA; then it occurred to me they had been on my floor for a couple days so that wouldn't be a very scrupulous thing to do.  I'm desperate, but not that desperate!  Here's what it looked like when I pulled it back out of the laundry room

Then I saw this over at Tatertots and Jello

Gorgeous, right?  The post was about the slipcovered sectional, but I couldn't stop staring at that rug!  It looked just like what I wanted mine to look like.  That's it, I'm going to finish it!

Here are the runners I used (MARIT table runners in beige and natural for $4.99 each)

I laid them all out and pinned them

Then I sewed them together
they got a little cumbersome in the sewing machine, but I got through it :)

They were all slightly different lengths so I hemmed the long edges.  And now I am sooooo happy with it!

This is exactly what the room needed... I feel like it cozies up the space a lot.  What do you think?

Thanks for stopping by!
Blessings,
Jamie

  2. Love this idea. I have a huge room that this would be perfect for. Right now I am wishing I still lived by an IKEA instead of 2.5 hrs away. (saw your post on Confessions of a Stay at Home Mommy)

  14. I love it! I would never have thought of using runners, but it's perfect. I do the same thing with projects. Start all excited, get discouraged and think it was a total fail and waste of money, and then fight my way back. I'm so glad you finished your rug.

  29. Ok, so I am definitely going to to do this for my living room! I hate spending a ton of money on rugs when they just get ruined so quickly! Question: what about it didn't you like about it the first time? Did you do something differently?

  32. Looks great but I'm curious what advantage there is to using IKEA runners rather than buying fabric at a much cheaper price and stitching that together? Not being snarky, I just wondered if it was a special fabric or somnething?

  35. Such a great idea. Thanks for sharing. Would you mind showing us a close up of how you are sewing one piece to the other...is it over laping, are you zig zagging it....how does it lay flat between the next piece??

    thanx
    Debbie.

  36. Hi Debbie! I didn't have any way to respond to your comment through email, since the comment came up as "no reply"... if you change your settings bloggers can respond to your comments. Here is a good link http://www.sweetsimplicityblog.com/2009/08/noreplyblogger.html

I lost all the photos we had stored on our external hard drive so I don't have any of the process!!! I overlapped the white on top of the beige runners and sewed it flat with a straight stitch. Hope that helps!

    1. Thanx Jamie. I'm not sure how I signed in, but I think I have it corrected now. So with the overlapping, do you notice the ridges when you walk on it? I'm not sure if this is a type of fabric, or a thicker runner, thats why I ask. Regardless...you did a great job and what a terrific idea. I will be pinning it to my board for everyone else to see it as well. You have a great night!!
