Subway Art Canvases

The Mod Podge Mania continues!  This canvas is a birthday gift for my awesomely awesome nephew
Seriously, the kid rocks and I think he needs to know it.  After the week at VBS, I started thinking about how important it is for our kids to know they are not an accident.  Every gift, every feature, every circumstance in our lives is hand picked especially for us by the Lord.  We need to remind our children of this daily!

"You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb." -Psalm 139:13

I am so often drawn to this verse; it helps me to understand that He made me and that I am His.

You can find more details about how to assemble these here.  This time around I wizened up a little and painted the edges/corners of the canvas before I got started.  It was driving me nuts that there were little bits of white peeking through on the other photo canvases.

I designed the layout in Adobe Illustrator and I had the images printed as 11 x 14s at Costco.  They were only $2.99 a piece!

I love Illustrator because the font is always crisp.  I adjusted the opacity on a lot of the words so there would be variation to the image.

I made one for each of my kids' rooms too.
This one is my son's... I forgot to include his #1 quality: musical!  I can't believe this oversight; I'm seriously going to have to redo his canvas because it will bother me until I do.  Maybe his constant drumming knocked something loose in my brain.

I decided to "distress" the image on my nephew's;  he just turned 8 and I wanted his to look a little more hip.  Do people even say hip anymore?

After dry brushing the black around the edges and on top of the image, I brushed on one last layer of Mod Podge.

Close up!

You can also get custom canvas prints.

Or you can visit my etsy shop and I'll make you one!

Do you have a one of a kind kid in your life?  Tell me about him or her in the comments!

***Just a note... do not try to print this on your home printer.  I have heard about bad results doing it that way.  Be sure to have it printed as a professional photographic print.  Also, you have to use a vector program such as Adobe Illustrator if you want crisp lines.  Programs that are based on pixels could turn out fuzzy!***

Blessings,
Jamie

I took a class in college with that program (why I have it) but it's been 10 years so it would be so helpful if I didn't have to start from scratch. What do you think? Pretty pretty pretty please with whip cream and sprinklers and a cherry on top...??

  76. another cute twist on this is something I have done with canvas' I have made. Use the prints/colored duct tape on the edges. You can really add alot of flair to it at very little cost and no artistic talent needed!! Love the way it turns out!!

  77. I have seen a lot of Subway art lately. I was not to sure about it, but I love this one. I will be making 3, one for each of my kids, in the next little while. Great gift idea. I love when I hear that such a craetive talented blogger loves God. He is Good!

  78. Please help! I created a Wordle Art from their website and had it printed at Office Depot (very cheap!). I covered my canvas with fabric so the sides would be pretty, however when I Modge Podged the paper to the fabric, all it did was wrinkle up :( I was wondering what you had your (Adobe Illustrator)image printed on? Paper doesn't seem to work. Unless I should just remove the fabric and paint the edges instead. Does the paper not wrinkle when applied directly to the canvas? Or did you have your image printed on something stronger like photo paper? My image is 18x24 so I may be limited to what I can have it printed on. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! darraghm@bellsouth.net

    ReplyDelete
  79. I am doing an 18x24 canvas. Will Costco be able to do a print that big or will I have to do several smaller ones? Do you print on photo paper or another kind? Also, are the instructions the same for modge-podging on canvas and/or wood plaques like the instructions you have posted? Or is there anything specific needed to accomplish this on a canvas?

    Thanks for your help! sarahjharnden@gmail.com

  81. LOVE this idea....am really into printed truth hanging on the walls!!
Have a few questions, if you don't mind emailing me & letting me know...thank you!!
    1) I ditto another question I saw up there, what is it printed on? I have contacted costco to see if it is something they will do, but don't know what to ask them to print it on.
    2) have you tried to print it yourself? possible?

    Thank you so much!!
    rjwood616@yahoo.com

    ReplyDelete
  82. Did you get a response about what type of paper was used and if you can print it yourself?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I wouldn't recommend printing it yourself... I've heard some bad things about doing it that way (like the image turned green, etc). Just get it printed professionally at a photo place like Walgreens or Costco!

      Delete
  83. Jamie - How do I print out the words. If the canvas is painted black and I want the letters to pop then the letters should be white? Should the words be printed on a laser printer? What about painting canvas vs. painting wood? Could you give more specific instructions?
    Thank you for your inspiration!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am glad I saw this! I usually delete "anon" comments from my inbox because I've been getting so much spam lately. Make sure you get the print done at a place like Walgreens, Costco, etc (a professional printing place). I've heard about prints turning green if you do it on a home printer so I can't guarantee good results with that. You could use wood instead of canvas. And I do recommend using a light or bright text against a dark background.
