Using Storage Bins to Organize Kids' Games (and other stuff too)

I am so tired of worn-out, broken and ripped boxes for storing games.  My family is just really rough on stuff I guess.  Anyway, I think I came up with a solution that works for us.
Ta da!

This is what I was dealing with before

Is it just me?  I feel like I need a lot more patience and/or a degree in engineering to figure out how to get all the pieces back in the box.  The "Cootie" games are the perfect size for the shoebox sized storage bins.

I love these things... they are all over my house.  I try to buy the same brand every time so that all of them will stack nicely (and I can move them from room to room as our needs change).  The shoebox sized one have helped so much with my pantry.
I know.  The labels are lame.  I'll get around to it.

By the way, this is great for puzzles too!  My son loves puzzles... our puzzle boxes were downright dilapidated.

I cut out the name of the game and used packing tape to adhere it to the side of the bin.

Put all the game pieces into a bin

If you put multiple in one bin, keep the games separated with ziploc bags

Store the game board on it's side.

So much better!

As you can see, there are a few games that required I save the original box.  I don't know what I would do with Connect 4 or Trouble's game board without the box.  Awkward and ginormous.  I think I'll at least reinforce the box corners with some clear tape.

Do you have any suggestions?
Blessings,
Jamie

  3. Organizing toys in general is so aggravating!! I have not bought certain toys because i didn't like how they had to be stored etc. I have yet to put games in containers but after seeing this I think I will start! Hungry Hungry Hippo is one game that drives me nuts...once it is put together it does not fit back in the box!! Grrr.....
    Thanks for the awesome idea!!

  4. I CAN'T stand it when the boxes to games get ruined!! It's a pet peeve of mine!! I have six kids, so I think it's a losing battle!! I use those bins for EVERYTHING at my house! Love them! I also use the larger ones (I think they are 16 quart ones) for larger stuff.

  5. Looks like we did the same thing this week. I get crazy about the puzzle boxes. I have said that if a company, like say Melissa & Doug packeged thier puzzles in plastic containers that could stack onto each other, I would never buy another puzzle from another company again. I was planning to blog about how I answered this problem. I will let you know when that post is up.

  6. I use Pizza boxes in a few sizes... and magazine holders. Both cardboard and fold away if needed. Obviously I would really love to use clear plastic but too expensive for me. If I get time I could share pictures. I am ALWAYS looking for ways to organize our stuff. Rotating "toy stock" was a good way for a while with the idea I would change stuff out every 3-4 weeks. But alas I did not keep up on it. I did work for a while. :) My other FAV is getting boxes from starbucks. The coffee boxes are perfect size (about size of a paper box). I started getting these to have same size boxes (free) to organize and store my paint supplies. Decorative art, lots of tubes of paint etc I needed something cheap that I could test for storage. I LOVE THEM. I pinned something in pinterest someone created really smart looking storage out of boxes by covering with fabric. I just covered with contact paper, used a viso-vis marker, not a lot of fancy decorative work in my storage. What I like about cardboard, light and did not add weight to the storage.

  7. BTW- I jumped to your page from "the organizing junkie" I did not read your landing page to realize you paint. I have painted part time for friends all my life. A wedding runner here, kids room there and a store interior (I thought cattails, butterflies and dragon flies to frame high shelving and products). SO my question is how do you organize your supplies. :) Obviously I am a cardboard box junkie, white contact paper and a sharpie- not so fancy. Love your ideas. For lent I organize/ clear out one pile for each day. My version of 40 days/40 bags (donated, recycled or whatever, as long as they are out of my house!). Ikea card board magazine boxes are a favorite for me.

  8. That's what we do too! And for those annoying puzzle boxes, I cut the picture off the box and place it in a ziploc bag with all the pieces, and then the bags go...yup, in a plastic container, ha! =)

  9. Jamie,

I bet you have already thought of this but I'm going to submit this suggestion anyway. If you buy a roll of clear contact paper and cover the puzzle/game boxes with it then the boxes last much longer than just covering the corners with tape. Yes it takes longer and is more difficult but worth the effort. And you can do one side and then the other overlapping the contact paper on the surface of the box so you are not dealing with as large of a sheet at one time.
