Extra Long Curtains for Super Cheap

Another window treatment post... yippee!  Sorry I've been gone so long; I've missed you all terribly.  Things are starting to slow down and the kids go back to school next week so I should be able to start blogging again.  Anyway, here are our newest curtains

It is crazy difficult to find reasonably priced curtains for really tall windows.  I got the idea to use cheap Bed Bath and Beyond tablecloths from from Robin Flies South.  I am eternally grateful to her!

You can buy any size for $12.99.  That's pretty close to $10 a panel when you use the 20% off coupon (which never expires, by the way).  Not bad, right?  These panels are 120 inches long... perfect for the 10 foot ceilings we have in the house!

I hemmed them just to make sure they don't puddle too much at the floor.

And I made "faux pinch pleats" that I learned to do from Allison at House of Hepworths.  The rings and clips are from IKEA.

Each side of the sliding glass door has two panels and the little window has one panel on each side.  That's about $65 in curtains.  

I tried one panel on each side of the big window, but the curtains wouldn't quite close all the way.  So I chip clipped them together when I wanted them to stay closed.  Just until I bought 2 more panels. 

 Yep, I'm super classy.

I am so happy with how they turned out!  The room is starting to come together... now just to replace the tiny coffee table that gets lost in such a big room.  I'll be posting about other changes in the house soon.  I promise!

Making Wall Photos Stand Out

These canvases were some of the first things to be hung in the new house, but I knew they needed a little something...

The black "frame" behind the pictures really makes them stand out on the wall.  Who says a frame has to go all the way around a picture?

I did something similar in our old bedroom to draw attention to the paintings behind the bed.

I painted the black rectangle right on the wall.

This is what the photo canvases looked like before I framed them

They were looking a little sad.

I just took an old IKEA shelf that was in a pile destined for Goodwill

filled the exposed side with joint compound

spray painted it

and I put it on the wall!  I used nails to hold the canvases to the board and anchored hanging wire to the back.  If you'd like to see how I made the canvases, click here.

Sew IKEA Runners Into a Rug (for only $35)

I wanted a jute rug for almost two years now.

We really don't have the money for it.  Not even the one from Home Goods.  Also, the more I thought about it, I didn't want something quite so scratchy since the kids spend so much time on the floor.  So I came up with another idea last May (and yes, I'm just getting around to posting about it now).  It involved using table runners from IKEA... here's how it turned out

I usually attack projects... not so much because I'm confident, but more because I have to see if how it turns out.  I'm a little stressed until I get to see the final result; hopefully it isn't a total bomb/waste of money.

This one I really dragged my feet for some reason.

I started sewing the rug last Spring and it was looking pretty jacked up.  I was disappointed in myself so I hid it in the back of the laundry room, never to be seen again.  I considered taking it apart and returning the runners to IKEA; then it occurred to me they had been on my floor for a couple days so that wouldn't be a very scrupulous thing to do.  I'm desperate, but not that desperate!  Here's what it looked like when I pulled it back out of the laundry room

Then I saw this over at Tatertots and Jello

Gorgeous, right?  The post was about the slipcovered sectional, but I couldn't stop staring at that rug!  It looked just like what I wanted mine to look like.  That's it, I'm going to finish it!

Here are the runners I used (MARIT table runners in beige and natural for $4.99 each)

I laid them all out and pinned them

Then I sewed them together

they got a little cumbersome in the sewing machine, but I got through it :)

They were all slightly different lengths so I hemmed the long edges.  And now I am sooooo happy with it!

This is exactly what the room needed... I feel like it cozies up the space a lot.  What do you think?

Repurposed Wine Thingies

I'm not much of a wine drinker... if you read this post, you know I think beer is where it's at.  I'll show you how to take a couple of items intended for wine bottles and make them useful for something else!

This is my IKEA wine bottle holder.

I don't have much wine, but I do have a lot of these!

I put some hooks on the wall for the dishtowels that are currently "in use" and I keep the fresh ones rolled up in the bottle holder.  We have very little drawer space in our kitchen so I figured I'd just put it all on the wall.  This would work great in a bathroom too!

It needed a little something on the top, so I put up our measuring spoons.

Here's another idea... this is a grocery store wine bottle carrier

It is also my favorite brush carrier!

 I know this isn't how many pros carry around their brushes, but hey, it works for me.

because no one likes to save these cover things for storing their brushes (or is it just me?)

And if you like to drink on the job...

Kidding!  You know I'm kidding, right?
