The Spiderman Trunk

I got a little more done this week

I refinished the trunk that sits at the bottom of the bed.

I was really tired of looking at this in the gray, red and blue Spiderman room

One of the reasons I dragged my feet with this project was a lack of direction.  I knew I wanted to paint something on the trunk that contributed to the theme of the room, but I didn't know what.  I came really close to overdoing it; I'm glad I settled on a more minimalist approach with the single spider.

Here's one last glimpse of the room before the final installment.  I'm working on some artwork for above the bed (and by working on, I mean I haven't even started it).

Kid Room Gallery Wall

A little.  More.  Progress.

I busted out the red spray paint yesterday and redid some old frames

This was from IKEA.

It used to be here (the one at the bottom).  The red frame makes it much more fun!

I added a ribbon to this plaque to balance out the color on the wall.

The Big Blue Dresser

Hi friends!  We are one step closer to finishing this room redo!

That looks just smurfy Papa smurf!

Here is the before

Well, part of the before.  It's the only pic of the dresser I have

I actually love the blue; it's just a big honkin' dresser so I felt like all that blue needed to be broken up a little.  Enter IKEA magnetic board.

I put a magnetic board on each side of the dresser.

And the best part?  I get to move all these off of here!

As much as I thought I wanted a "clean" fridge it's depressing me.  It's making me think of a day when I will miss having the filthy little hands moving filthy little letters around on a refrigerator.   Not to mention, you don't notice what a sad, sorry fridge it is with all the letters on it.  So I put some back on the fridge and moved the rest to the other magnetic board.

I had all these shapes from an old Melissa and Doug toy.  A little hot glue and some magnets will do the trick!

 

I considered just painting Big Blue in magnetic paint but I didn't want to have to have to wait for all those coats to dry.  I figured we could reuse and repurpose these boards for many years to come.  The magnetic paint can be pretty stinky too and I wanted to get the dresser back in our son's room ASAP!

I know, I know, I need a bigger lamp!  I'll get around to it one day.

Tarps as Window Treatments?!

Yep.  I used picnic tarps.  Hey, it's a Spiderman room, we aren't exactly going for the classiest decor award here

Do you know how much curtains cost???  It's really hard to find them for under $10 a panel.  Even if I were to buy my own fabric and make them, it would come to about $10 a panel... and that's using the cheapest fabric around (with a coupon).

These were $4.99 each at Home Depot!  I've either hit rock bottom or I've struck gold in finding and using these.  Maybe a little bit of both :)

I'm not going to pretend that this is the most luxurious fabric ever.  They are a little, um, stiff.  The red side feels like fabric and they are backed with a silver plastic-type material.  But they fit our needs perfectly for now! 

Another update to the room:  trim!  My amazing husband put chair rail and window trim up.

All the windows in our house looked like this.

And then I saw a post at House of Hepworths for how to fix these eyesores!!!  So easy and soooo much better.

I feel like this room redo is dragging on forever!  More to come.  Hopefully we'll have it all wrapped up in another week or two.

DIY Felt Board

Here's another tidbit from my son's new room

I made him a felt board for his birthday.  Every time I take my kids to storytime at the library, they obsess over the felt board.  I have no idea what the attraction is, but they love it!

I took the bigger framed chalkboard that used to hang here (it had been moved to the basement with no real purpose in life)

Covered the board with a big piece of felt

put some hot glue the back

then popped the board back in the frame

Ta-da!

I only put glue on the back so I can convert it back to a framed chalk board if I want to.  I am getting a ton of mileage out of this IKEA frame.  I promise I'll get around to doing the room reveal in a couple weeks!  You can see a few clues in the pic below (we put up some chair rail and completely changed the color scheme).
