I Just Couldn't Help Myself...

We're in the new place and loving it!  There are still boxes to be unpacked and things to be organized.  So what did I decide to do this week?  Paint, of course!

The cabinets in the kitchen are beautiful, but I had really grown accustomed to the white cabinets we had in the old house.  I loved the bright and clean look of the minimal color scheme and painted cabinets.  Here is the kitchen in the old house

The builder-white walls in the new house weren't cutting it for me with the granite and stained cabinets; I felt they demanded something dramatic.

The entertaining room, kitchen and eating area are essentially all one room, so I wanted to find a way to distinguish them from one another.  I love the spacious feel of the house with the high ceilings and open floor plan.  Because of the size I figured the space could handle deeper tones on the walls.
this is the entertaining room (before we put the slipcovers back on)

The white contrasts the wall color so nicely

I absolutely love how the area turned out, but it is such a stark contrast to the old kitchen.  My taste has been heavily impacted by the white kitchen trend that is so popular now, so this seemed like a big risk!
Here is the the eating area before...

and after.  That light has got to go!!!  We'll probably take it down this weekend.

And I love this color against the stone in the fireplace

What do you think?  Can a kitchen in darker colors still be considered beautiful by today's standards?  If you're curious about the colors I used, they are:
Benjamin Moore Elephant Gray
BM Smoked Oyster
BM Caponata

  4. I like the colors you chose. Normally I'm not for grey in a kitchen but being such a big space it comes off as very warm and classic. Good work!

  5. I totally hear you on this. We redid our old houses kitchen in a beautiful cream glaze that I loved. We moved into a new house that has these very well made cherry cabinets but it seems so dark to me. I miss my cream cabinets. It's hard for me to not want to change it because it's so nice. So in the meantime, I'm living with it, but one day, I think I will bust out the cream again!

  8. Your rooms are beautiful! And since they are YOURS, that's the standard that matters, not "today's" standards. Who is "today" anyway?

  11. Beautifully done. I like the darker color in the kitchen, simply because it separates the wall from the ceiling and defines the room.

  13. Hi Jamie, I think today's standards are overrated. If you like it, that's what matters. Love what you've done. Lots of great upgrades!

  17. Jamie, I love it! The risk paid off, and the grey against the wood is beautiful. I have very warm wood trim and cabinets right now and also took a risk and I am sooo glad I did.

Stop by and say hello sometime, Hugs- Tanya :)

  23. So great, and I love that you didn't break down and go with white. I'm tired of white kitchens! ;)

  24. We built our house a little over a year ago and went with stained cabinets and a black island. I really love the white kitchens but was worried about the whole fad thing. I do question that decision sometimes with all the lovely white kitchens everywhere, but I can't say it's not beautiful :) So in answer to your question, yes dark kitchens can still be beautiful. Go to Houzz.com and search for stained or dark cabinets. Trust me, they're gorgeous!! And your paint looks great!!!

  31. I can certainly relate to this post. I left behind creamy white cabinets, greyish tan countertops, knaki walls and hardwood floors in my last kitchen. Fast forward to cherry cabinets and black granite all in a great room. I feel like the only person in the world without a white kitchen! Putting in a blacksplash helped and we painted the opposite wall. I love what you did with the paint color and honestly I didn't want my husband to live in a "girly" kitchen.

  38. Hi! I really love the gray color in the dining room. Could you tell me what it was? I am having the HARDEST time deciding on the right gray, and I would love some suggestions.

    1. The wall left of the corner in the dining area is BM Elephant Gray. The wall to the right (with the painting) is BM Smoked Oyster. The color has the slightest tinge of purple to it... that's what I loved about it but I know purple isn't for everyone :)

  40. The black gave your kitchen a more dimensional look to it. Before you painted you really couldn't tell there were other rooms; but with the black it's so rich looking. Love the cabinets also. Beautiful job done. Very contemporary looking. Really like it.
